Much of Qinghai sits above 3000m. Xining (2200m) is a good acclimatization stop. Qinghai Lake is at 3200m. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and take it slow on the first day.
Cycling around Qinghai Lake (360km) is a popular 3–4 day activity. Bikes can be rented in Xining or at the lake. The annual Qinghai Lake International Cycling Race takes place in July.
Qinghai has a large Tibetan population. When visiting monasteries, walk clockwise around prayer wheels and stupas. Ask permission before photographing monks or locals.
Qinghai's cuisine reflects its Tibetan and Muslim heritage. Must-try dishes include Yak Yogurt (牦牛酸奶) — thick, tangy, and famous around Qinghai Lake; Hand-Pulled Noodles (拉面); Barley Wine (青稞酒); and Roasted Lamb (烤羊肉). The local markets in Xining offer excellent street food, especially the Muslim night market at Dongguan Mosque.
