Home    Tibet Tours    Tibet Travel Guide    Can We Visit Mount Kailash? Top Questions for Kailash Yatra 2026

Yes, you can visit Mount Kailash in 2026! Whether your goal is to complete the full Kailash Kora or just see the sacred mountain, tours are open to international travelers. You’ll need a pre-arranged tour and essential permits.

1. Can Anyone Visit Mount Kailash Regardless of Age?
There is no official age limit for visiting Mount Kailash. Senior travelers, even in their 70s, have successfully completed the trek, provided they are physically healthy and acclimatized to the high altitude.

2. What Are the Health and Safety Requirements?
High-altitude sickness is the main concern. The Mount Kailash trek crosses Dolma La Pass at 5,630 meters and averages around 5,000 meters over three days. You’ll trek roughly 12 km per day, with the second day being the toughest at 24 km. Consult your doctor to ensure you are fit for this plateau journey.

3. Can We Do Only Part of the Trek?
Yes. If you cannot complete the full 3-day trek, you can do a short hike on the first day from Darchen. Once you cross Dolma La Pass on the second day, the trek must continue. Private tours allow flexibility to adjust your schedule to your physical condition.

4. Can We Visit Mount Kailash Independently?
No. Independent travel is not allowed. You must book a tour with a local agency, which provides permits, a licensed vehicle, and a Tibetan guide. You can join a small group or customize a private tour.

5. Can We Visit Mount Kailash from Kathmandu or by Air?
Yes. From Kathmandu, the overland route via Gyirong border takes about 10 days and includes Lake Manasarovar and Darchen. You can also fly from Lhasa to Ngari Gunsa Airport, the nearest airport to Mount Kailash, then continue by land. Helicopter tours from Nepal are available but still require some overland travel.

6. Can We Focus Only on Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar?
Yes. You can skip other Tibetan attractions and concentrate on the sacred sites. Overland from Kathmandu takes 10 days, while flying from Lhasa shortens the journey significantly.

7. Can We Physically Touch Mount Kailash?
No. Pilgrims cannot touch the mountain, but you can perform the outer kora, build Mani stone piles, and pray along the sacred paths.

8. Why Is 2026 a Special Year to Visit Mount Kailash?
2026 is the Year of the Horse, one of the holiest times for pilgrimage. Completing a kora this year is believed to be as spiritually powerful as doing it 13 times in other years. Early planning is recommended due to high demand.
