How to Travel in Xizang (Tibet) for the First Time

1. Get Your Travel Documents in Advance
A Xizang Travel Permit is required for all travelers. It can only be obtained through a licensed travel agency that provides local tour services. Once you book your tour with us, we’ll handle the application on your behalf.
2. Best Places to Visit for First-Time Travelers
Lhasa (4–5 Days)
Your journey starts in Lhasa, the heart of Xizang. Visit the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Barkhor Street to explore both the sacred and daily life of locals. Don’t miss the monk debates at Sera Monastery.
Everest Base Camp (8 Days)
For many travelers, reaching Everest Base Camp is the highlight of Xizang. The classic 8-day Lhasa–EBC route covers all the essentials: Lake Yamdrok, Karola Glacier, Tashilhunpo Monastery, and the awe-inspiring Mt. Everest.
Mount Kailash (10–15 Days)
For adventurers, a journey to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar is unforgettable. Located over 1200 km west of Lhasa, this epic overland trip takes about 15 days, often with a night at Everest Base Camp along the way.
Lake Namtso (Extra 1–2 Days)
If you have extra time, add a side trip to Lake Namtso, especially between April and October. Surrounded by the Nyenchen Thangla Mountains, the turquoise lake is often called “Heaven on Earth.”
3. Best Time to Visit Xizang
The best months to visit are April to October, with April, May, September, and October offering the most pleasant weather and best trekking conditions.
Summer is the peak season—book early to secure tickets.
For budget travelers, winter brings fewer tourists and great discounts on hotels and flights.
4. Getting to Xizang: Flight or Train
It’s recommended to take the train one way and fly the other for the best experience.
If train tickets are hard to get during peak season, consider flying in and taking the train out instead.
