Chongqing is the largest and most populous of the Chinese four provincial-level municipalities with a history extends back at least 3,000 years. The city is the starting point of the Yangtze River Cruise, which explores the wonderful scenery of the Three Gorges. Historically, most of its transportation, especially to the eastern China is through the Yangtze river. Now Chongqing is linked to other parts of the country through several railways and highways. Chongqing attracts visitors from home and abroad for its cultural heritage and tourist attractions.
Fengdu is known as the "Ghost City", and is a very popular shore excursion site for tourists on the Yangtze River. Now with fantastic temples of underworld demons and gods, it shows the Chinese ghost culture and is a place for punishing the devil and awarding the good.
Shibaozhai represents one of the gems of Chinese architecture. It was built against a rectangular rock with sheer cliffs on the river bank with a height of 56 meters, on the top of which you can enjoy a panoramic view of the rapid currents and the countryside.
Wanxian is one of the most important and largest ports on the Yangtze. It is widely known for its variety and hustling markets. Fifty percent of the city will be resettled after the Three Gorges Dam Project is completed.
Fengjie(White Emperor City): actually a mini peninsular town scattered with temples and gates, it is located at the entrance of the Qutang Gorge on the north bank of the river.
The town was named by an official of the Western Han Dynasty--Gongsun Shu who in 25 A.D., saw white vapor in the shape of a dragon rising from a nearby well, and by taking this as an auspicious omen, he declared himself the 'White Emperor' and renamed this town.
Another legend makes this town famous, it is said that Liu Bei, the King of Shu State during Three Kingdom period (220-280AD) withdrew to this town after he was defeated by the armies of Wu State, there on his deathbed, he entrusted both the state affairs and his sons to the care of Zhuge Liang, his prime minister.
Three Gorges Dam, costs 70 billion US dollars and for the purpose of flood control, electricity, navigation, and irrigation, is the largest water conservancy project ever undertaken by man. It will be 2,335 meters long, 185 meters high, 18 meters wide on the top and 130 meters wide at the bottom. The Three Gorges Dam will raise the river to a level of 175 meters above sea level, creating a 600 kilometers long reservoir with storage capacity of 39.9 billion cubic meters.
Wushan, the Three Small Gorges, referring to the three separate valleys of the Daning River, are respectively, Dragon-Gate Gorge, Misty Gorge and Emerald Gorge. You can take a small junk to enjoy these marvelous spectacles of nature.
The Lesser Three Gorges is one of the exciting and spectacular stops along Yangtze River. Here sheer cliffs and steep mountains rise on both sides of the gorges, just like one of natural arts gallery emerging before your eyes.
Zigui is located at the exit of Xiling Gorge, near which Xiangxi (Fragrant Stream) joins the Yangtze River. There erected a tomb and a memorial pavilion for Qu Yuan, a great patriotic poet in ancient China. One may take a dragon ship in the Fragrant Stream and see the native town of Wang Zhaojun, a famous beauty in ancient Chinese history.
Shashi(Jingzhou), a well-preserved ancient city, was also a place for its strategic importance. Many historical relics are unearthed here, among which the bronze articles, silk and lacquered wares are very notable. Amore than 2000-year-old male body in the museum is the most ancient corpse in a good state of preservation in China.
Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province, is situated at the confluence of the Yangtze River and its greatest branch, the Hanjiang. Wuhan is the biggest hub city as well as the center of economy, culture and politics in Central China.
