Traditional performance

Travelers to China derive immense joy from the famed Peking Opera, Chinese acrobatics and as well as the traditional music and folk dances. If you are looking for ideal evening entertainments in China, there are several leading shows you should never miss while you are there.

Beijing Opera Show: Beijing Opera, mostly known as Peking Opera, is a purely Chinese opera form, which dates back to the year 1790. That year, four local opera troupes of Anhui Province came to Beijing on a performance tour on the order of the imperial court.

The 1.5 hour Peking Opera is full of Chinese cultural facts, the opera presents to the audience an encyclopedia of Chinese culture as well as unfolding stories, beautiful paintings, exquisite costumes, graceful gestures and acrobatic fighting.

The costumes in Peking opera are graceful, magnificent, elegant and brilliant, most of which are made in handicraft embroidery. As the traditional Chinese patterns are adopted, the costumes are of a high aesthetic value.

Beijing Kung Fu Show: This newly-produced show is put on in the Red Theater located on the east of Tiantan Hotel in Xing Fu street, Chongwen. The theatre has collected a group of the best Kung Fu practitioners in China and invited the best directors and designers of the country. After seeing that, visitors will be really excited about that and eagerly to practice.

The Legend of Kung Fu follows the story of a young boy found wandering outside an ancient temple. Like every boy in China, he dreams of becoming a Kung Fu master. On the road to enlightenment the young monk encounters many difficulties and temptations.

The show has English subtitles shown above the stage to keep you informed of the story line. The actors do not speak and the show is all Kung Fu, dance and acrobatics. It is the fusion of modern dance with Chinese traditional arts which make this performance unique and spectacular.

All performers are local, mostly from Zhuang and Yao background and more than 600 people play on the performance. The face changing show in Chengdu: The face changing, or "bianlian" in Chinese, is an important intangible cultural heritage in China. Only a few masters have grasped this skill, they know how to change Sichuan opera masks in magically quick succession. As they flourish their arms and twist their heads, their painted masks change again and again and again. Face changing got its start 300 years ago.

At the beginning opera masters changed the color of their face during performances by blowing into a bowl of red, black or gold powder. The powder would adhere to their oiled skin quickly. At present the masters use the full face, painted silk mask, they can be worn in layers, as much as two-dozen thick, and be pulled off one by one.
