| Kunming is capital of Yunnan Province, home to a mix of ethnic groups and endowed with a remarkable traditional folk culture. | Stone Forest (Shilin) | The West Hill and Dragon Gate | | Located in Lunan County, The Stone Forest is known as the First Wonder of the World for its natural landscape, which is about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from Kunming. It occupies an area of 400 square kilometers and consists of a whole range of karsts formations formed by karsts two million to thirty million years ago. The Forest was contains peaks, pillars, stalagmites, depressions, underground rivers, and caves. The quintessential karsts landscape makes every tourist lost in wonder. | nicknamed Sleeping Beauty Mountain because it resembles a woman reclining, offers many other diversions. It is a natural forest park in kunming by the Lake Dianits lofty chain of mountains crisscrossed by gurgling brooks and streams. Ancient trees heap up rich piles of foliage, and birds warble and flutter in the midst of fragrant flowers. Along the way, you can stop now and then to enjoy the beauty of the scenery: blue skies, green water with slow sailing fishing boats and so on. |
| Golden Temple (Jindian) Park | Temple of the Perfection and Success (Yuantong Si) |
| just northeast of Kunming, is a national forest reserve and scenic resort. The Golden Temple itself sits atop the Mingfeng Mountain. The temple is 6.7 meters high and 7.8 meters wide. It cast 250 tons of solid bronze, making it the largest bronze hall in China. In and around the beautiful natural landscape of the park are man-made gardens and sites of historical interest. The 1999 International Horticultural Exposition took place here. |
built during the Tang period (618-907), rebuilt between 1301 and 1320, and subsequently restored on several occasions during the next few centuries. An octagonal pavilion situated in a square lake is of particular interest. In the main temple, the Hall of Perfection and Success (Yuantong Baodian), the visitor should look out for some 14th C Buddhist statues and two Ming period (1368-1644) dragons made from colored clay which are coiled around two pillars. |
| Cuihu Park | The Dianchi Lake | | found on the western side of the Yuhua Mountain in Central District, Kunming. The forms of green trees are mirrored in the lake, dying the water an emerald green. Weeping willow trees sway invitingly on the shore, echoing the lotus flowers growing on the lake. The environment is refreshing, graceful and tranquil all at once. In winter, tens of thousands of wintering red-beaked gulls descend upon the lake, drawing large crowds of curious onlookers. | 370 square kilometers in area, 44 meters in depth, and 1,885 meters in altitude, is the eighth largest lake in China and the largest in Yunnan Province. For its exceptional charms the lake is nicknamed Sparkling Pearl Imbedded in a Highland? Its shores are strewn with scenic spots and places of folklores. Sailing on the lake, with the boat swaying gently on a vast expanse of liquid silver, proves to be a most enchanting experience. |
